Where is Julie and what have you done with her??

If you know me, you know that I really, really, really like my diet coke. Preferably with lemon...a good lemon (yes, there is such a thing as a good lemon and a not good lemon). A seemingly shortage of good lemons has led me to become fond of adding a splash of Diet Dr. Pepper in my Diet Coke (thanks Heidi and Heather). This love of mine also seems to keep my social life healthy...food, friends, driving, watching tv, working...it all seems to go better with a Diet Coke. Am I right or am I right? I even have a network of friends at the corner gas station whom I love to chat with whenever I go in for a "freshie" (ie. the correct terminology for a Diet Coke fresh from the fountain. Thanks Mary). Yes, Diet Coke has become a part of my daily life. Not to the extent that I have one for breakfast but, everyday nonetheless. Yes, I am aware that I can clean a toilet, car battery and whatever else with this drink with will one day kill me. BUT I STILL LIKE IT. A lot. So why am I going on about my love for the wonderfully, fizzy brown drink??

I HAVE NOT HAD A DIET COKE FOR 4 DAYS!

Four days people! I know, what has the world come to? I will NOT commit to giving it up completely. I am, however, seeing how long I can go without it and seeing (really, really hoping) if there are any incredible health benefits for doing so. Like better workouts/runs and oh, maybe, a bit of weight loss. I wonder if any of these "things" you hear about soda are true. It's funny, I find myself almost getting bored without the comfort of my 32 oz. Holiday cup filled with that really good pellet ice and fresh Diet Coke. I am trying to replace it with lots of water. Yes, I have all sorts of drink mix variations to help out. Other than boredom, a few mild headaches (I can't believe they weren't worse!) and some temptation from Chad last night I AM ROCKIN' IT!!! Seriously, I can't believe it! I would like to think I could allow my self some allowances like Diet Coke on weekends, but truthfully, I'm afraid I will fall off the wagon completely. For now, I am going to go as long as can and hope that my Diet Coke free body will shed pounds and run a marathon (ha ha).

Wow! I was going to tell you how much I love Cherry Coke Zero, or if I can't have that, Diet Coke with Diet DrP, but I guess I better not. I asked my running coach/district weight loss guy about diet soda and he said that he hasn't seen any research showing the carbonation is harmful. The only problem he has seen documented is that people get the double big mac with extra large fries, but it's o.k. because they are drinking diet soda.

Caffeine, on the other hand, is definitely without many clinical fans. Most people take it in some form (the difference between Mormons and Jack-Mormons is the temperature of their caffeine), but it is not a good thing. So I guess that's a good plus to quiting.

That said, I imagine the increase in water over the soda has got to be much healthier. And the little tubes of pour-in flavor (have you tried the Ocean Spray Ruby Red Grapefruit? YUM!) sure makes it easier to drink the ultimate diet liquid.

The headaches will subside pretty soon, and they are from the caffeine.

Way to go! Keep us updated on your kicking the habit!

You are hilarious. I love diet coke as well, who doesn't? But I try not to have one unless I'm out and about - I don't keep cans of it in my pantry. Scott decided as a new year's resolution, our family should give up soda for the year. Nice, huh? I had an occasional diet coke because I like it (not addicted at all) and he says, "you don't have to if you don't want to" with all children looking at me. Nice. What am I to say? We are doing great, except for a few on vacation :)

Is it April Fool's Day? Is this some kind of joke?!

Seriously... good job. I look forward to hearing about the results.

After reading the Ensign article about caffeinated sodas and energy drinks in December, I gave up Diet Pepsi, which from what I just read, I loved as much as you love Diet Coke! I had it everyday, sometimes several. I thought it would be harder to give up and I'd have worse headaches, but it wasn't bad. I've found some great replacements. And I still allow myself a diet pepsi / coke when we eat out, since the only non-calorie options are usually that and water. I love water and drink a lot of it, but I get bored with it. Good luck, its a great goal!

If it makes you feel any better, President McKay was known for never seeing a movie without a Coke in hand, sometimes even joking around with theater workers who tried to encourage him to drink something else.

Good luck Julie. I have a similar affinity for the real, fully caffeinated, loaded with calories Coca-Cola. I prefer the Mexican coke with pure sugar you can get at Costco. I weaned myself off all caffeine when I was nursing Audrey, but then quickly took it back. I hope you have more determination than I did. I look forward to hearing about the results...I might just have to try giving my Coke up soon...but not too soon.

Gary and I gave up all soda Jan. 2008. I didn't drink a ton, but he did, so I was shocked at how much better I felt after about 10 days. I still miss it in certain situations...love sonic and sam's club ice...but it's been sooo worth it. You go Girl!!!!
