What's the business with the Strabismus?

So, we learned a couple new words at our house last week: Amblyopia and Strabismus.

Over the last several months, I had noticed Sarah's right eye wandering inward a bit when she would read or do homework. Next, came the failed vision screening letter from the school. We only have one person to blame for Sarah's eyes. We blame mom for her teeth, but the blame goes to Chad for this one. His "lazy eye" was corrected when he young with an awesome pair of thick glasses...the ones with the lovely bar across the top.

We've learned some very interesting things about the eye and Sarah's condition. She was pretty much legally blind in her right eye. Basically, the left eye was stronger and the brain stops using the right eye so that eye loses it ability to see (if I'm explaining this correctly!). Even more fascinating, Sarah has no depth perception. When given a 3-D test she was unable to see any of the dimensional objects. Luckily, with treatment, this should all be reversible. With Sarah's age and type of condition, we qualified to be part of a study. In this study, the treatment plan is to try to fix the sight with glasses only. Usually, this condition is treated with a patch. Not that it would be the horrible if she had to wear a patch, but we are glad she doesn't. The best part...free glasses! They will check-up on her and if there is no improvement, they will screen (or blur) the left lens. This would take the place of patching...again, no patching...a good thing.

Right now, the glasses are still very much a novelty. Something else to make Sarah look and act older. I love that she looks adorable...I hate that she keeps looking older. It's been exciting to watch her see things in a whole new way!

She is just darling! With or without the specs, but these are especially cute on her! Tell her Kenzie said so! Isn't it amazing what we don't know...we see the kids everyday and can miss the simplest things! So glad this was caught and she's on her way to better vision!

The new specs look great! I am glad you have so many options and a positive prognosis. What a blessing you were able to catch it early.

Sarah, you can always do what I did. Just sit on your glasses, break them, and hope that your parents don't have the patience to get a replacement pair.

ooohhh...love my sarah-a-beara with or with out the glasses.
She is beautiful so it really doesn't matter either way.
(shhhh...I remember us sitting and laughing at a pic of Chad and the lazy eye not that long ago);)

For three generations everyone in my family becomes legally blind and has to get glasses at age 12. Suzy's entire family has perfect vision. So we've got a few more years for our gene pool battle royale.

She looks great! C.J. has a similar conditon and has been wearing glasses since kindergarten. His eyesight has improved a lot so he thinks he doesn't need glasses anymore. He keeps "misplacing" them.:)

So glad you caught it early! She looks so "grown up" in her glasses!

My little sister had to do the patch as a toddler and it was terrible! My mom still talks about it and has guilt about doing it to her so good choice on no patches!

Good luck with the treatment/glasses :) She's such a cutie in glasses! Olivia always loved her's. My friend's daughter did the patch, and it was a successful treatment (although her little girl hated the patch, lol).

Julie,
I remember when she was just a babe! How time flies. Your artistic flair comes out in your blog. I have always admired your eye for design. Hey, we were just in town last weekend. I hate to even admit it. In fact, to rub salt in the wound, we drove right by the back of your house. Miti got on me for not setting up a quick visit with ya. He wanted to just stop by, but I told him next time we will have to let you know ahead of time. It was a crazy weekend. My neice got married and we got there late friday and left sunday. Excuses, excuses. Anyway, I don't know if you know, but Janeen moved to Boise already so, getting together this summer is out. But, if you and Jackie want to meet half way, I could meet some weekened. Or you guys are always welcome to come to Vegas. Miss you Julie. We love you and your family and I am so so very excited that we are in contact again. I know that you tried to get a hold of me before we moved, but the blog is a lot easier to keep connected. I am glad I started blogging. I just got ours up a month or two ago.
Love you!
